A: You can include the Cute Reminder's data folder into the list of folders to be backed up by any software such as Windows Backup. Alternatively, you can do this manually. Cute Reminder's data folder contains the files userdata.rem, userdata.hst and audio.ini. Its typical location is as follows:

Windows 98/ME
C:\Windows\Profiles\USER_NAME\Application Data\CuteReminder\

Windows 2000/XP
C:\Documents and Settings\USER_NAME\Application Data\CuteReminder\

Note: Backing up this folder will save all your reminders, notes, ideas, audio preferences and the history.

Q: How to restore my data?
A: Terminate Cute Reminder. Copy the previously saved content back to the Cute Reminder's data folder. Be aware that all reminders, notes and ideas as well as history will be totally overwritten. Start Cute Reminder.

Q: The sound that I have selected does not play. What is wrong?
A: There are several possible reasons. The file may not exist, or your system may have no necessary audio decoding software installed. To check what is the case, please select "Preferences" from the "File" menu of the Control center and click the "Audio" tab. Make sure that the field "Test phrase" is empty. Click on the file that you want to test and then click the "Test" button. If something is wrong, you will get an error message describing the nature of the problem. If a file does not exist at a specified location, click the "Browse" button to find it. If you get a message such as "Unable to recognize file format" then your system does not have the "standard" audio decoding software; you may face this problem even though you can play your mp3's with another audio player such as WinAmp because players may use their own audio decoders. Please see the next topic on how to solve the problem.

Q: How to install audio decoding software, which is necessary to play mp3 and wma files in Cute Reminder?
A: Usually you do not need to do this if you have Windows 2000 or Windows XP installed on your computer. If you have Windows 98 or Windows ME you may download for free Windows Media Player 7.1 for Windows 98 from the Microsoft web site at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/software/playerV7.aspx.
Windows Media Player 7.1 supports many audio codecs including those necessary to play mp3 and wma.

Q: The sound is playing perfectly in the Audio tab of the Preferences panel, but another sound is playing when a reminder triggers. What is wrong?
A: There is certainly an interference with the keywords that Cute Reminder uses to recognize what sound to play. Below is an example of what the nature of the problem may be. Table located in the "Audio" tab of the Preferences panel:

Words
Sounds
 meeting
 sound_1.mp3
 briefing
 sound_2.mp3

If you create a reminder "Meeting with the marketing team" the file sound_1.mp3 will be assigned to it, because Cute Reminder finds the word "meeting" in the reminder's text. If you create a reminder "Briefing for the marketing team", the file sound_2.mp3 will play as the reminder shows up, since there is a word "briefing" in the reminder's text. If you create a reminder "Briefing and meeting" the file sound_1.mp3 will be assigned to it, because Cute Reminder finds the first keyword "meeting" in the reminder's text. You can test how the keyword list works by typing test phrases and clicking the "Test" button in the "Audio" tab of the Preferences window.

Q: How to turn off text labels in the toolbar of the Control center?
A: Open the Control center and select "Preferences..." from the "File" menu. Uncheck "Show text labels in the Control center toolbar".

Q: How to protect my reminders from seeing by others while I am away of my computer?
A: Turn on the screen saver on your system (right-click on your desktop and select "Properties" then "Screen saver"). Open the Control center of Cute Reminder, select "Preferences..." from the "File" menu and make sure the item "Disable when screen saver is running" is checked.

Q: How to arrange the notes having one color separately from the notes having another color?
A: Open the Control center, select "Preferences..." from the "File" menu and check the item "Arrange differently colored notes separately".

Q: How to play an audio file at specified moments?
A: You can make a reminder containing a keyword to which your sound file is assigned, or you can make a reminder beginning with the command #sound<FULL_PATH_TO_A_FILE>, it will play the specified file without showing a reminder sign on your screen.

Example:
#sound<C:\My Documents\My Music\Happy Birthday.mp3>

Q: How to run Cute Reminder at the Windows' start up automatically?
A: Open Control center, select "Preferences..." from the "File" menu and check the item "Run at Windows start up".

Q: How to select another fonts in my notes and reminders?
A: You can change fonts in your notes, reminders, ideas and reminder's signs. Open Control center, select "Preferences..." from the "File" menu and click the button "Text Font" or "Sign Font".

Note: You can select only the type and the size of a font; styles such as bold, italic and underline are ignored.

Q: What should I to do with my idea when it appears on my screen?
A: Please read it thoroughly, as you have time. Then follow the guidelines below:

1.   If you think that the idea is a worthless one - trash it.
2.   If the idea is a good one, create a reminder or note to implement it.
3.   If you cannot definitely say whether the idea is good or bad - postpone it.

Q: How to adjust the opening/closing speed of the Quick access panel?
A: Open the Control center, select "Preferences..." from the "File" menu and select the "Options" tab. Use the track bar and the "Test" button to adjust the opening/closing speed of the Quick access panel.

Q: How to send my own coloring to a friend via e-mail?
A: The colorings are stored in the Colorings subfolder of the installation folder of Cute Reminder (by default its location is C:\Program Files\CuteReminder). You can attach the coloring file to an e-mail.

Q: I have just received a coloring from my friend. How to install it?
A: The colorings are stored in the Colorings subfolder of the installation folder of Cute Reminder (by default its location is C:\Program Files\CuteReminder). You can save the attached coloring file from an e-mail directly into the Colorings folder. Then you will see the new coloring in the colorings list, as you open the Preferences window from the "Preferences..." menu of the Control center.

Q: How to design my own skin for the Quick access panel?
A: It is possible, but it is not simple. You will have to prepare separate images for regions corresponding to four buttons of the Quick access panel, four images for regions to highlight button borders, four images to highlight icons, some additional images and one single image defining the shape of the entire panel. You will have to prepare also the images corresponding to the upper, bottom, left and right locations of the panel. It is really a lot of work. The skins are stored in the Skins subfolder of the installation folder of Cute Reminder (by default its location is C:\Program Files\CuteReminder). Each skin is located in a separate subfolder and consists of multiple files in Windows bmp format.

Q: How to start an application at a specified time?
A: You can create a reminder with a program file linked to it (e.g. winword.exe). Then you can start the program when the reminder's sign appears on your screen. If you want the program to be started without your intervention, it is a good idea to use the Windows Scheduler located in the Windows control panel.

Q: I have got an error message!
A: Please see the section Error messages of this help file.

Q: What does mean the "Ignore missed" check box in the reminder's schedule window?
A: Check it if you do not want intraday recurring reminders to appear on the next day. Please see also a note in the Health Care topic of the Tips and Tricks chapter.

Q: How to print out an idea, note or reminder?
A: There are several ways to do it. Please see the Printing topic of the "Using Cute Reminder" chapter. Alternatively, you can copy a text from Cute Reminder and paste it to any other application (e.g. Notepad or Microsoft Word) to print it out from there.
